O3: SPECIAL ORAL CARE CURRICULA IN POSTGRADUATE DENTAL TEACHING
An upgraded curriculum for the Special Oral Care section of the Paediatric Dentistry postgraduate (residency) programs was drafted as a result of evaluation and comparison of the curricula currently in use in project countries, taking into account the recommendations of the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD). The document represents a tool for university centres hosting postgraduate training programs in Paediatric Dentistry in Romania and a suggestion for other countries where PD residency curriculum does not include SOC. An upgrade in SOC curriculum for PD residents in Romania represents a step towards levelling training with European standards. A new optional course with a curriculum based on the Upgraded Special Oral Care Curriculum for PD residency programs drafted by the OSCAR team was introduced at Carol Davila University. It comprises 7 online courses, with written course support and power point presentations provided to students, presenting oral features associated with various general conditions and dental management of children with special healthcare needs. The course combines theory with presentation of clinical cases.
Research article on how special oral care is taught in project countries, both to under- and postgraduate students. Curricular differences are reflected in dental practitioners’ self-perceived skills and attitudes towards providing oral care to children with special healthcare needs. This research served as a base for an upgraded SOC curriculum proposal within the current paediatic dentistry residency program. Research study presented in the Association for Dental Education in Europe’s annual meeting 2021 (Strasbourg , on-line). Authors: Didilescu A, Vinereanu A, Tanase M, Vacaru RP, Ilinca R, Munteanu A. Pilot study aiming to assess dentists’ level of confidence in providing treatment to children with SHCN and their felt need for more information on SOC. Participants took an on-line survey regarding their own experience and self-perception in providing SOC. While 97.6% of all respondents confirmed the need for more information and training on SOC, significant differences in SOC training, experience and attitude were found. Study presented in the IAPD Congress 2021 regarding differences in dentists’ training and experience as reported barriers for dental addressability of people with special oral care needs (SOCN). Aim:To evaluate dentists’ perception about providing dental health care to SOCN patients. 165 dentists from 5 countries answered a self-administered MCQ form. Differences between countries regarding confidence in providing SOC were noted. 97.6% of the dentists were interested in further SOC training. Conclusion. Need is felt among dentists from various countries for further training in SOC, which could help increase dental addressability of people with SOCN. available: Int J Paediatr Dent. 2021;31(Suppl. 2): 426. Research presented in the Interim Seminar of the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry, Oslo, 2021 (virtual) Aim: To assess dentists’ perception and attitudes towards providing dental treatment to patients with special oral care needs (SOCN). 102 dentists from Romania, Turkey and Italy participated. Residents in pediatric dentistry (n=44) were more exposed to working with SOCN patients than other dentists (88.6% vs 77.6%, p>0.05). Almost half (45%) of the subjects had referred/refused to treat SOCN patients for various reasons. Only 58.8% felt confident in treating SOCN patients with non-pharmacological methods (Italians more confident than Turkish and Romanian dentists, p=0.019);67.7% were confident/very confident in using drugs for behaviour management. Need is felt among dentists from different countries for practical information on special oral care. Structured, easily accessible information could help improve access of patients with special needs to oral care.
